The italian daily “La Stampa” reported today that public prosecutors in Palermo carry on a brand new investigation about Cosa Nostra that – in the early ’90s – uttered heavy threats against Silvio Berlusconi in order to obtain a significative influence at least in one of his television channels. At those times Berlusconi was not in politics, but he did control (and he does yet) the three biggest commercial tv in Italy (Canale5, Italia1 and Rete4).
These threats – as reported “La Stampa” – are proved by a hand-written document found in 2005 during a police-search in the house of Massimo Ciancimino, son of Vito Ciancimino, former Palermo’s mayor and for almost 40 years political referent of the winning families from Corleone (Bernardo Provenzano and Totò Riina). Prosecutors are actualy seeking the author of the threats and have ordered many calligraphy tests. From the first results, the document (that is incomplete) seems to be written in 1991, or maybe before: in 1988, speaking on the phone with Renato Della Valle without knowing to be intercepted, Berlusconi said: “I’m sending my sons abroad because I have a big problem. It happenend also ten years ago, they are back now. They said that if I don’t do a certain thing in a certain time, they will send me the head of my son, and the rest of his body will be exposed in Duomo’s Square”.
This new investigation opens many questions about the relationships between Berlusconi and Cosa Nostra. First of all, why the document found in 2005 by Carabinieri (the italian military-police force) has been ignored for so many years? What had done Berlusconi after the threats? Did he went to the police and, if not, why not? How did he managed Cosa Nostra’s threats?
